Engineering a 7.0L for the Mid-Engine C8

That shallow pan is critical for lubrication and handling, so it had to remain unaltered, but it left minimal clearance for a stroker crankshaft. Lingenfelter’s solution was a custom forged rotating assembly developed with Callies: a 4.00-inch stroke, eight-counterweight crankshaft with special slim counterweights that can spin inside the tight confines of the stock LT2 oil pan. The engine block is CNC-blueprinted and fitted with iron sleeves to increase the bore, allowing the use of 4.125-inch forged MAHLE pistons and sturdy H-beam connecting rods. This strengthened, bored-and-stroked bottom end achieves the full 427 cubic inches while retaining the factory oiling and scavenging system for track-ready reliability. Equally important is making this 7.0L work seamlessly with the C8’s lightning-quick dual-clutch transaxle. Lingenfelter developed a custom camshaft grind (the “Eliminator Spec S” cam) in partnership with COMP Cams, tailored to keep the enlarged LT2 in the optimal torque range for the 8-speed DCT’s shift points. In other words, the cam and engine tuning are optimized so that the huge 7.0L powerplant delivers its muscle in a way the DCT can put to the pavement without hiccups. The result is an engine that roars to 7000 RPM with ease yet remains docile and street-friendly when cruising. Lingenfelter even ensured the 427 package could utilize all the C8’s stock accessories and fit under the stock engine cover, maintaining an OEM-like appearance. It’s a true engineering marvel – packaging big-block performance into a mid-engine Corvette with no loss of drivability or functionality.
Big NA Power: 7.0L Naturally Aspirated (700+ HP)
For purists who love immediate throttle response and old-school V8 sound, Lingenfelter offers the naturally aspirated 7.0L 427 in a package aptly named “Eliminator Spec S.” In this trim, the stroked LT2 breathes without turbos or superchargers – yet it still cranks out a mind-blowing 700+ horsepower at about 6700 RPM and over 600 lb-ft of torque around 4800 RPM. That makes it the most powerful naturally aspirated engine available for the C8 Stingray or E-Ray, far surpassing the stock 495 hp LT2. On 91-octane pump gas, this 427 delivers big-block muscle reliably day in and day out. In fact, when Lingenfelter installed the engine in a test Corvette (a new E-Ray) and ran it on the dyno, it put down about 577 horsepower and 528 lb-ft to the wheels, which equates to just over 700 hp and 600 lb-ft at the crank once drivetrain losses are accounted for. In other words, this C8 now has C7 Z06/ZR1-beating power without any forced induction.
What’s more, the character of the engine is markedly different from the stock 6.2L. The 427’s longer stroke and increased displacement yield a torrent of low-end and midrange torque, giving the C8 that shove-in-your-seat acceleration and muscular exhaust note that harkens back to classic big-block ‘Vettes. Lingenfelter says the goal was to give C8 owners the sound and feel of a high-torque, big-cube V8 in their mid-engine supercar– and they’ve delivered. The car rumbles with a deeper exhaust note, and every blip of the throttle is met with instantaneous response. Yet, thanks to extensive tuning, the package retains factory-like manners when you’re not hammering the gas. It’s a Corvette that can comfortably cruise around town and then transform into a track monster at a moment’s notice, all while staying naturally aspirated.
Twin-Turbo 427: Breaking the 1,100+ HP Barrier
Of course, for those who believe “too much is never enough,” Lingenfelter didn’t stop at 700 hp. The team has been hard at work on a twin-turbocharged version of the 427, turning the C8 into a truly world-beating supercar slayer. Enthusiasts began to speculate “what if they slapped turbos on it?” as soon as the 7.0L NA was announced – and Lingenfelter was already a step ahead. The TT package employs a pair of high-performance turbochargers (Lingenfelter has prototyped using Garrett G35 series turbos) plumbed into a custom exhaust and intercooler system designed specifically for the mid-engine C8. Impressively, Lingenfelter says this setup will hit its power targets with only about 15 psi of boost. The company has even mirrored the turbo layout that Chevrolet is using on the C8 ZR1’s new flat-plane twin-turbo V8, indicating just how thoroughly engineered this package is. With less stress (lower boost) for the same or more output, the 427 TT should have a nice cushion of reliability. The engine’s forged internals and lower compression (for boost) are built to handle the extra air, and an upgraded fuel system (higher-flow direct injectors and pumps) ensures the thirsty turbos are fed properly.
Despite the insane output, Lingenfelter is designing the twin-turbo 427 to remain streetable and refined. The turbos, intercoolers, and piping are packaged to fit within the C8 without cutting up the car – you won’t lose your trunk space or creature comforts. The calibration is being dialed in on the factory ECU to behave nicely in everyday driving. And while final figures and quarter-mile times are still forthcoming, there’s little doubt this will be one of the fastest-accelerating Corvettes ever when it’s fully unleashed. Over 1,000 horsepower with a factory-like demeanor – truly the best of both worlds for the most power-hungry Corvette aficionados.
Even the Corvette E-Ray Gets the 427 Treatment
One of the most intriguing aspects of Lingenfelter’s 7.0L program is that it’s compatible with the Corvette E-Ray, Chevrolet’s new hybrid AWD Corvette. The E-Ray combines a 6.2L LT2 V8 driving the rear wheels with an electric motor on the front axle for a factory-rated total of 655 horsepower and 592 lb-ft of torque. That’s impressive in its own right – but Lingenfelter saw even more potential. They have successfully installed the naturally aspirated 427 into an E-Ray, essentially replacing the stock LT2 with the stroker 7.0L V8. The result is a hybrid Corvette with big-block power augmenting its electric assist. With around 700 hp from the 427 and 160 hp from the front motor, an upgraded E-Ray could theoretically punch out roughly 850 combined horsepower (when the battery boost is available) – a mind-boggling figure for a street-friendly AWD vehicle.

Selecting all of these options can bump the total engine package cost into the mid-$30k range– on top of the cost of the Corvette itself.
And that’s just for the naturally aspirated setup. The twin-turbo package will be an add-on (pricing to be announced), which also requires upgraded fuel delivery and likely some transmission enhancements to handle the immense torque. It’s safe to say a fully built twin-turbo 427 C8 will be a significant investment, potentially pushing $50k+ in upgrades all told once everything is said and done.
